Genus Elaeocarpus, also known as Ivory Wood or Ivory Persimmon. Dark trunk, evergreen plant. Endemic to Taiwan before 1870. Listed as Endangered by the IUCN. Taiwanese cypress grows only 10 cm in 30 years when planted in the ground. Ivory Persimmon also grows slowly. A century-old, ground-planted Ivory Wood tree only reaches about the thickness of an arm. Extremely dense wood, sinks in water. Hard, dense, and polishes to a sheen. Also known as ebony, a high-grade precious timber. A representative top-tier precious wood in Eastern culture.
