It belongs to the Notocactus genus (cephalium cacti) within the Cactaceae family and is a succulent plant native to Bahia, Brazil. It's a solitary, globular, and relatively small cactus, covered in dense white wool and red bristles. The areoles are circular with short white wool. All new spines are red, while old spines are gray with brownish tips. It typically has 6 radial spines and a central spine, reaching 1.6 cm in length. The flowers and fruits are both magenta. The body is spherical or oblong with distinct ribs. Spines vary in length; many varieties have very robust and brightly colored spines. The main characteristic is that after maturity, a cephalium composed of wool and bristles forms at the apex of the body, commonly known as a "yun zuo" (cloud seat). Once it reaches flowering age, the cephalium emerges from the top and can continue to grow taller, sometimes exceeding the height of the cactus body itself. We often hear about "yun zuo" (cloud seat). "Yun zuo" refers to the "cephalium" of a mature Notocactus cactus that has grown to a certain size. It's named this because its cephalium resembles a cloud. While the areoles of a cactus are where flowers and offsets grow, some cacti divide their growth pattern into two stages: during the juvenile phase, they focus on growing taller and larger, and their areoles are not yet capable of flowering; during the mature phase, they begin to concentrate their areoles, forming a dense aggregation of spines and hairs, which is the "yun zuo." At this stage, the areoles that have formed the "yun zuo" gain the ability to flower. Currently, this 'Cui Yun' plant has not yet developed its "yun zuo" and is still in its adolescent phase! The cephalium at the apex of the Notocactus genus is its most striking feature, resembling a pie or cake. When it blooms, it's like a decoration on a cake, and when it fruits, it looks like small candles on a cake. Its adorable appearance is truly captivating.
