We often hear the question, "How is “freehand embroidery” different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is fully automated; the machine reads the design, and an automated process stitches it. This results in perfectly uniform, identical embroidery every time. In contrast, “freehand embroidery” is a craft where an artisan manually guides the fabric, allowing them to create the design. Because it is made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-embroidery. It's an astonishingly skilled technique that involves transferring the sketch to the fabric and embroidering while looking at the original design, all while coordinating the up-and-down movement of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is impressive! In Vietnam, there are currently just over 400 people who can perform freehand embroidery. However, only about 50 of them work professionally. Of those, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. And among them, only 10 individuals possess the skill to execute Pangandaran's challenging embroidery designs. But being highly skilled isn't enough; embroidery requires artistic sensibility. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For these reasons, we entrust our work to Hun-san, who possesses the highest level of expertise. Hun-san is currently 46 years old, but he began learning the craft at 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has a truly exceptional sense for design. We place our complete trust in him. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many places, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, now, experienced artisans train apprentices themselves. Hun-san has trained four individuals so far, but he notes that there are no young people capable of mastering this technique recently. Due to rapid economic growth, traditional handcrafts are being left behind. It is anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to decrease. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and the national systems offer little protection, meaning Vietnam's freehand embroidery is destined to become a fading art within the next decade or so.
