▰▰▰▰▰▰ HIGO ZOGAN ▰▰▰▰▰▰
Alongside Kyoto Zogan from Kyoto and Kaga Zogan from Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan also boasts Higo Zogan from Kumamoto Prefecture. Originating in the early Edo period (around 1603-1680), Higo Zogan was primarily used to adorn the tsuba (sword guards) and saya (scabbards) of samurai swords. Characterized by its strong samurai ethos, Higo Zogan eschews any form of lacquer. Through a secret technique of oxidizing the iron base, it achieves a blackened surface. Compared to Kyoto Zogan, which uses raw lacquer for its rust-proofing layer, Higo Zogan possesses a weighty feel and profound beauty that perfectly articulates Japan's samurai aesthetic.
Kyoto Zogan has a long history, said to have been introduced to Japan from the Silk Road during the Nara period, and is known for its delicate beauty. The founder of Higo Zogan learned the craft in Kyoto before developing his own unique style.
How is the characteristic rust-black of Higo Zogan achieved without raw lacquer? After inlaying on the iron base, it is first pickled, then coated with a proprietary "rust solution" and dried by heat. This is followed by another application of the "rust solution" and heat-drying. With two hours between each step, it takes about two to three days to develop sufficient rust, which is the source of Higo Zogan's substantial feel.
Subsequently, a protective layer is added to the repeatedly generated rust layers. The piece is boiled with tea leaves; the tannins in green tea help inhibit rust formation. This process takes 30 minutes, followed by heat-drying. Finally, the surface is repeatedly coated with oil and fired, then wiped with camellia oil to complete the masterpiece!
