Artwork Introduction_ This beautiful engraving is from George Graves' 1811 book British Ornithology: being the history, with a colored representation, of every known species of British birds, Vol.1 ". George Graves (1784-1839), FLS, was an English publisher, artist, engraver, and colorist devoted to botanical and ornithological works. In addition to Ornithology of Britain (1811-1821), he also wrote and illustrated Ovarium Britannicum (1816), The Naturalist's Pocket Book (1817), and Plants of Britain A Monograph on British Grasses (1822). From 1817 he was responsible for hand coloring and publishing, together with William Jackson Hooker of Curtis' Flora Londinensis (1817-1828). These exquisite studies of Britain's birds include many songbirds, game birds, owls and hawks, divers, waders and seabirds. It contains 144 fine bird plates, most drawn, engraved and hand-colored by George Graves (some plates were made after Samuel Howitt and Sydenham Edwards and engraved by Weddell and Warner.) The painting in our collection is the famous "Whirlwood Bird". Bird mainly inhabit mountain coniferous forests, mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, broad-leaved forests and secondary forests. They often move alone or in pairs, and are extremely sexually active. They are active for 15 to 16 hours a day from dawn to dusk, with short rests in between. When perching, they use their sharp claws and hard tail feathers to support their bodies. It has poor flying ability and is better at climbing vertically on tree trunks. Usually gather in mature forest or park woodland with dense old trees.
