As a shop owner, I rarely purchase pre-owned jewelry (mainly because I don't use it often). Compared to pre-owned bags, jewelry isn't always the most cost-effective. Items in good condition are usually priced quite high, especially from my two favorite brands, Celine and Loewe. They produced fewer jewelry pieces historically, unlike Dior or Chanel, which have an overwhelming variety. Furthermore, preservation awareness was lower in the past, so items often aren't in the best condition. Consequently, the overall circulation of pre-owned jewelry from these brands in the market is considerably less than others. I often wear modified pieces; even small vintage accessories were exquisite enough to be transformed into stylish and minimalist jewelry. This is a 100% authentic Celine vintage piece, originally a scarf ring, which I have repurposed into a necklace or waist chain. The ring features a deeply embossed "CELINE PARIS" inscription. The pendant's gold plating is exceptionally well-done, exuding a rich texture and absolutely no cheap feel. Its condition is truly beautiful. This is a "modified" piece, handcrafted by me! I have modified the middle chain section to increase its length, allowing it to be used as a long necklace or waist chain. The gold ring features a prominent raised "CELINE PARIS" engraving on the front and an embossed maker's mark on the back. Both engravings are substantial. Its condition is superb, with only minor signs of wear. It is exceptionally golden, with a rich luster, showing absolutely no oxidation, discoloration, or peeling of the gold. In the past, most pre-owned items were handmade, imbued with the warmth of human touch rather than mass production. The craftsmanship was undoubtedly more delicate than machines, much like how everyone appreciates products crafted by artisans! Today, the vast majority of processes are automated with minimal human assembly, losing that former intricacy. I believe the simplest, most direct comparison can be made by looking at the new "revived" monogram patterns from recent years versus the authentic vintage monograms; the level of detail in the monogram alone is entirely different. If you love monograms, seek out pre-owned items! Truly! In terms of style, pieces from older eras are generally more simple, timeless, and enduring. Many current designs are actually revivals of older styles. However, new releases are priced higher. New designs are typically based on older models, with added details or altered designs. The final product often ends up more complex (or peculiar...) than its predecessors. I believe as we grow older, we realize one thing: the simpler, the more enduring! As we age, our clothing choices often return to basics because the most fundamental pieces are the most versatile. The quality of raw materials in older pieces is also superior to newer ones. If you understand leather, you'll see that the materials used in new items are generally of a lower grade than vintage ones. This is mainly because the cost of premium raw materials is too high now, and their availability is less than before; Earth's resources are dwindling! Furthermore, brands back then didn't have the ubiquitous presence of stores they do now... Their clientele typically had a certain income level and certain expectations for their purchases. There wasn't the "fast fashion" culture of today; a bag was expected to be used for many years. The difference between new and old eras is clearly visible in the hardware. Many new items' hardware oxidizes and discolors after just a year or two of use, but vintage pieces typically do not. Besides the high-quality materials and meticulous techniques, hardware from earlier eras was often plated with genuine K gold! It's worth mentioning that Vintage Chanel is expensive for a reason; many of its clasps and chains contain real gold, certified by gold merchants! This is why the hardware on many vintage bags, even from the 60s and 70s, can still gleam today if properly maintained. Among the new items available now, to my knowledge, none of the hardware contains K gold, making them prone to oxidation. Many people say buying vintage bags is a form of alternative investment because they rarely depreciate and often appreciate in value. This is because well-preserved pre-owned bags are becoming increasingly rare in the market; each one is a disappearing piece. Remember, each of these items is discontinued. The number that exists in the world is finite, so they will only become fewer, more expensive, and harder to find. Moreover, many brands periodically increase their prices, and each increase drives up the prices in the pre-owned market. If a brand releases a "reissue," the reference or similar styles from the vintage era will see a sharp price increase! Add to this the recent trend of Japanese and Korean celebrities using vintage items; once a particular style is seen on a celebrity, its price skyrockets almost instantly. This is because, for a period, many people will frantically search for that style or a similar alternative, causing the prices of those few items to multiply... Therefore, vintage is truly a case of "buy early, enjoy longer; buy late, pay more" (this isn't an advertising slogan... it's a truth in the vintage world...). This is my personal experience; I regret not acquiring some collections earlier, as they are now impossible to find, or if found, come with an astronomical price tag... But the problem is, even knowing it's an astronomical price, you're compelled to buy because waiting will only mean a higher price (unless the condition is poor).
