Normally, when making plates, flat, rolled out clay called tatara is used, but these are made by pulling the clay into a cylindrical shape on a potter's wheel. Hand marks called "rokuromegome" appear on the surface, giving the piece a different feel from plates beautifully crafted using the tatara method.
