Ancient Egyptians considered lapis lazuli a "sacred stone," worn only by high-ranking pharaohs and high priests. It corresponds to the throat and brow chakras, can help alleviate eye fatigue, and harmonize the throat chakra. It is believed to aid in treating insomnia, dizziness, headaches, and lowering blood pressure. It can calm the mind, elevate spirituality, stabilize one's mindset, and is suitable for deep meditation. Lapis lazuli is a granular aggregate composed of various minerals. If soaked or rinsed with water, surface dirt can penetrate the interior, altering its original luster. It should be kept away from moisture, or dried immediately if it comes into contact with water.
▪ [Origin of the Five-Colored Thread]
The five-colored thread, also known as the "five organs thread" or "long life thread," is also called the Vajra thread. Its characteristic is being made from fine threads of five colors and interwoven knots. The five colors – yellow, green, white, black, and red – represent the Chinese concept of the Five Elements: Earth, Wood, Metal, Water, and Fire; as well as the "Five Directions": Center, East, West, North, and South. Therefore, folk beliefs hold that it can expel plagues from the eight directions, ward off evil of the four seasons, and protect against the harm of the five poisons. It is also known as "five-colored silk" or "five-colored cord." From Song dynasty poetry, we know this item for repelling evil became an adornment and a symbol of romantic love and conjugal harmony, also called "concentric hundred cords." In some parts of China, wearing it from the Dragon Boat Festival extends to the Qixi Festival, evolving into the "Daughters' Festival" where pomegranate flowers and colorful threads are worn. Customs vary between north and south. In the north, it is often called a "concord cord" or "concentric thread," while in the south, to ward off evil and pray for blessings, "long life thread" and "life-extending thread" are popular names.
The fundamental classic of Tang Esoteric Buddhism, the "Great Vairocana Buddha Sutra Commentary," details the methods for cultivating the "Vajra Thread Dharma." "When making a thread, one should select the finest threads, wash them with scented water until extremely clean, and have a pure maiden tie them together in a clockwise direction. Combine five colored threads. One should use the true mantra of each of the five Buddhas to hold one color, and then empower them all with the mantra of completion for all affairs." These five colors, also known as the "five Tathagata colors" – white, red, yellow, blue (cyan), and black – are empowered by the mantras of Mahavairocana Buddha, Ratnaketu Buddha, Flower Blooming Buddha, Amitayus Buddha, and Drum Sound Buddha, respectively. The five colors also represent the five wisdoms of the Tathagatas – faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom – also known as the five dharmas: faith, diligence, right mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. This practice requires a master to perform rituals, personally tie three knots on the thread, forming a Vajra knot, and wear it on their left arm. They also tie it on the arms of disciples who have entered the mandala to empower the disciples, helping them overcome obstacles and increase the five wholesome roots.
