We are often asked how 《freehand embroidery》 differs from standard machine embroidery. Regular machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery design and automatically stitching it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical embroidery every time. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it is made by hand, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-stitching. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and meticulously stitching while referring to the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 can do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, a mere 10 can execute the intricate embroidery required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled is not enough; embroidery requires a sense of artistry. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old and has been embroidering since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has a truly exceptional sense of design. We place our complete trust in him. With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. The number of artisans is expected to decrease further, and Vietnamese freehand embroidery is likely to fade into obscurity within the next decade or so.
