Author Biographies
Charles Kingsley (1819-1875)
A renowned 19th-century British children's literature author, he penned over sixty novels and essays. "The Water-Babies" is his representative work. Kingsley spent much of his childhood in a small fishing village on the western coast of Britain. He graduated from Cambridge University with honors in 1843 and subsequently became a clergyman, actively participating in Christian socialist reform movements. In 1873, he was appointed Rector of Westminster Abbey, Britain's most famous cathedral.
Madame de Giraudon
Inspired by Aesop's Fables, French writer Madame de Giraudon compiled the fables that were popular in the vernacular at the time, creating "The Tales of Reynard the Fox," which remains beloved today. The original text of "The Tales of Reynard the Fox" dates back to Latin narrative poems from around the 10th and 11th centuries, later revised by others into a composite poem of twenty-seven fables.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
An English literary giant. His father's imprisonment due to debt forced the family to live in the debtors' prison, and Dickens was sent to work as an apprentice in a shoe-blacking factory. Perhaps it was enduring these difficult times and experiencing the fickleness of human nature that led him to frequently focus on the lives of the underprivileged in his later works. His novel "David Copperfield" precisely reflects his own bitter experiences.
Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957)
A famous American children's literature author of the 20th century. Born in Wisconsin, USA, Laura spent her early childhood living a pioneer life with her family, residing in various places including Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa. From 1880 to 1881, they endured the coldest winter in South Dakota's history, a story that later became "The Long Winter" in Laura's writings. It was also here that Laura began attending school and met Almanzo Wilder, who would become her husband.
