Native to the Andes in central Argentina, it is a low-growing, clumping plant. It lacks a prominent taproot, instead having a dense and well-developed fibrous root system. The segmented stem segments are fleshy, oblong, and lack ribs, appearing grayish-green or grayish-brown. Areoles are covered with brown glochids and bear 1-3 papery spines (the species itself is spineless), which are white or brown, measuring 3-10 cm long and 0.6 cm wide. Flowers are white to pink.
