【Synopsis】
"In those years, I wrote these works word by word, holding back my eager heart as if writing a love letter to someone." — Lee Chang-dong
This book is a collection of short and medium-length stories published by Korean director Lee Chang-dong in 1992, which won the Korea Daily Literary Award. The following year, he was invited by director Park Kwang-su to enter the film industry, subsequently transitioning and gradually becoming a globally influential cinematic master.
As the author writes in the preface to the Chinese edition: "The stories in this collection reflect the Korean reality of the era when I was writing novels. However, what I wanted to depict was not just the reality that suppressed individual lives, but also characters who struggled against the pain in reality while searching for the meaning of their personal lives. I believe this is the most essential thing that literature or film should express."
The collection of stories showcases ordinary people living amidst complex and ever-changing historical tides, how they arduously pursue the value of life and self in reality, not only fighting against the cruel realities of the grand era but also searching for the meaning of survival in difficult times.
The author describes the encounters of these characters and the transformations that occur in the process. While seemingly piecing together the Korea of that era, the delicate writing, through the medium of fiction, dissects history like a blade, transcending time and space, language and borders, allowing readers to embark on journeys of self-exploration regarding their identity and the value of their existence, engaging in the most honest dialogue with themselves through the stories.
