It is a sphere made of cedar branches and leaves, hung under the eaves of sake breweries and shops. It serves as both a sign for the business and a symbol of prayer for successful brewing and the renewal of sake. As the seasons change and new sake is brewed, the color of the Sugidama gradually shifts from fresh green to a brownish-red. This color transformation mirrors the rhythm of sake maturation, allowing passersby to instantly perceive the birth and maturity of new sake.
