Its name comes from the milky white appearance of its shell surface and its smooth, fine texture, reminiscent of pearls. Nautiluses first appeared on Earth in the late Triassic period. After hundreds of millions of years of evolution, their appearance and habits remain largely unchanged from their ancestors, making them highly valuable for studying paleontology and biological evolution. The shell of the nautilus is divided into multiple separate chambers by transverse septa. The nautilus pumps gas into these chambers, using this to control its buoyancy and movement.
