[Synopsis]
Professor Au Yeung Cheung Cheung's "The Second Half of Life," since its initial publication, has undergone several revisions. This book, which explores the latter half of life, progresses from "You Must Treat Yourself Well," "Learn to Be Kind to Yourself," and "Let Yourself Go," to "Embrace Yourself." The latest edition introduces a new chapter, "Entering the Second Half of Life: How 16 MBTI Personalities Develop 'Inferior Perceiving Functions'," discussing the currently popular MBTI and how we can utilize it to aid our continued growth in the second half of life.
We often hear complaints that people entering the second half of life are stubborn and get stuck in ruts. This is understandable; we tend to over-rely on our own perspectives, making it difficult to let go of our value systems, sometimes leading to endless arguments with those who hold different opinions.
However, while letting go of others' views might be manageable, truly letting go of oneself is actually more challenging. This includes accepting one's regrets, forgiving one's mistakes, acknowledging that physical stamina is not what it used to be, that the body will decline, that fatigue comes easily, and even the inclination to just lie down.
Life is short, and significant breakthroughs in external political situations are not easily achieved. The suggestions in this book for the second half of life are essentially proposals for "managing one's inner self." These proposals are particularly important in a turbulent society. Only with a stable anchor within can one face a world of constant change. We should also enjoy the fruits of the seeds sown in our first half of life, rewarding ourselves.
