Inlaid jewelry—known as damasquinado or damasquino in Spanish—is the art of decorating steel with threads of gold and silver. Damascening is the art of inlaying different metals into one another. (Typically, gold or silver is inlaid into a dark, oxidized steel background) to produce intricate patterns resembling niello. The English term comes from the similarity in appearance to the rich brocade patterns of damask silk. The technique is still practiced in cities with a long history of damascening, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Toledo, Spain, Eibar in the Basque Country, and Kyoto, Japan. ______________________________________ As this collection is quite old, there may be more signs of wear.
