Every mother weaver passes down a unique riverine weave to her blossoming daughters. The Ika River Weave and Ika Key Weave are traditional patterns of the Phou Tai people of Laos. The River Weave features meandering, V-shaped lines. The intricate weave, resembling a maze or a key, showcases complex, right-angled turns. Remarkably, these "Ika weaves" are not created on the loom itself. The patterns are meticulously planned during the dyeing stage. White sections are carefully calculated, and threads are bound to resist the dye, dictating the final design. Each family possesses its own unique dyeing and weaving techniques. Countless daughters inherit teachings from their mothers, Then, guided by their own connection to the earth and landscape, They transform these traditions into new expressions. Fathers and brothers labor in the fields, Cultivating and harvesting plants for dyeing, And constructing the frames and details of looms from bamboo or wood.
