Butterscotch amber has a long history in Tibet. Legends say Tibet is rich in this material, but it's not actually produced there. Tibet served as a major trading hub where much of the amber was cut and polished into beads or prayer malas for Buddhist offerings. Over years of devotion before the altar, the heat from incense and lamps caused unique transformations. Ancient devotees believed that Tibetan butterscotch amber malas, having been exposed to chanting and prayer for extended periods, held a mystical power. Another belief is that butterscotch amber possesses a strong magnetic field, making it ideal for wearing to ward off evil, protect the wearer, calm the spirit, ensure peace, and even alleviate rheumatism and attract wealth. As many Tibetan butterscotch amber pieces were passed down through generations by high lamas, considered consecrated items, their efficacy is said to far surpass that of ordinary butterscotch amber products.
The antique butterscotch amber pieces at shanchiart in Taipei were acquired 20 years ago through connections with Tibetan lamas. Strictly speaking, these should be classified as "trade beads." Their origin dates back to the 17th century or even earlier, during periods of European colonial expansion. These beads were produced in large quantities in Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, then transported to West Africa to be exchanged for goods like ivory, gold, slaves, and olive oil. Today, these trade beads have also found their way into Tibet and Central Asia via the ancient Silk Road. Replicas were also made and sold in Europe and elsewhere. Despite being imitations, they possess a certain cultural background and historical significance, and are favored by many Europeans, commanding considerable prices. Some international experts have even assigned valuations to these beads.
Given the cultural context of antique butterscotch amber and its use dating back over a century, it stands as a historical testament to the evolution of amber development, making it a coveted collectible for ancient bead enthusiasts. Its market price is currently not insignificant. Although "antique old butterscotch amber" might be crafted from artificial resin and special formulas, it represents 300-400 year-old German craftsmanship—ultimately, some people appreciate history and culture! International experts have also placed high valuations on these antique butterscotch amber pieces, suggesting substantial future appreciation potential.
PS
This bracelet features a thick, aged patina on its surface, with a color tending towards black. The historical traces are evident, and I estimate this piece to be at least 400 years old, if not older!
