About Wood Firing 'Wood firing' is a traditional kiln method where the kiln reaches temperatures above 1200°C using firewood. The natural 'fire marks' left directly on the ceramic body by the flames, and the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, give the pieces a warm, rich, and varied coloration that cannot be achieved with electric or gas kilns. Compared to typical electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from arranging the kiln, igniting the fire, sealing the kiln, to cooling it down—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense pressure within a wood-fired kiln, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking, and kiln placement, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans consider the kiln's airflow when arranging pieces, meticulously planning the placement of various sizes, estimating the upward path of the flames, managing the stoking of wood and charcoal, and controlling the fire's intensity.
