About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches high temperatures of over 1200°C using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left directly on the clay body by the flames, along with the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, imbue the works with a warm, rich color palette and varied textures, achieving a realm unattainable by electric or gas kilns. Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process, from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling, takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure in wood firing, coupled with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of human intervention in stoking the fire, and kiln placement, can all influence the success or failure of the work, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artisans consider the kiln's airflow and speed when stacking. They meticulously plan the placement of works of varying sizes, estimate the upward path of the flames, decide when and how to stoke with wood and charcoal, and control the intensity of the fire.
