As we age, our clothing choices often return to basics because the most fundamental pieces are the most versatile. The quality of raw materials in older pieces is also superior to newer ones. If you understand leather, you'll notice that the materials in new items are often of a lower grade than vintage ones. This is primarily because the cost and availability of high-quality raw materials are much higher now, and global resources are diminishing. Furthermore, brands didn't have the ubiquitous presence they do today. Their clientele typically had a certain income level and specific expectations for the finished product. There wasn't the "fast fashion" culture of today; a bag was expected to be used for many years. The difference between new and old eras is clearly visible in the hardware.
