The legend of Yuè Lǎo, the Old Man Under the Moon, originates from the story in "Xuán Guài Lù. Dìng Hūn Diàn" written by Li Fuyan during the Tang Dynasty. In the story, the young man Wei Gu, guided by the old man's matchmaking, eventually married the daughter of the vegetable vendor mentioned by the old man years later.
