1890 German Deep-Sea Creature Illustrations

The original stones for lithography are said to be found only in Solnhofen, Southern Germany. This printing technique was invented in 1798 by the Austrian composer Alois Senefelder (1771-1834), marking the origin of planographic printing. Due to the labor-intensive process, each print required the original artwork to be redrawn and reapplied multiple times, leading to its eventual obsolescence in the printing industry. Consequently, each printed image possesses a fineness akin to hand-drawing, and today, the value of each print is nearly equivalent to that of an artwork. Although this technique was phased out by the printing industry, it was preserved by printmakers.
