A pendant light defined by a single band of wood, forming an unbroken, seamless circle. Pendant KAN draws upon the philosophies cultivated through traditional domestic woodworking, such as sashimono (joinery), as well as the 'hiki-mage' technique—a method of creating curves by making precise saw cuts into the wood. The delicate notches visible on the curved surfaces are more than mere decoration. They are essential for transforming straight timber into soft curves by carefully layering intricate adjustments onto the rigid material. Rather than concealing these markings, we refined them as a necessary structural element for bending the wood, allowing them to remain as part of the overall design. Our aim is not simply to reproduce traditional techniques, but to interpret their inherent logic and beauty, reconfiguring them into a contemporary product. We strive to move beyond viewing these crafts merely as objects of appreciation, instead carefully integrating them into everyday life. Wood and Light The light source is positioned inside the vertically extending wooden frame. When illuminated, the light from the bulb shines onto the inner wood surface, bringing out the wood grain and the subtle shadows created by the hiki-mage technique. By combining direct light with the soft reflected light from the wood grain, the lamp creates an effect as if the wood itself is glowing faintly. Its slender proportions ensure it does not overwhelm the space; use a single piece as a quiet accent, or group them to add rhythm to your lighting design. The scale is designed to blend naturally into various areas of the home, such as dining areas, kitchen counters, entryways, or bedside tables. Crafted Individually, By Hand Each piece is made one by one using woodworking techniques honed through the creation of sashimono. Rather than relying solely on machine processing, every stage—from processing and assembly to finishing—is performed while carefully observing the condition and grain of the wood, resulting in subtle differences in each piece. We have fashioned this light to be a long-lasting companion in your home, embracing the unique character of the material and the traces of handcraftsmanship.
