He then uses computer technology to combine multiple negatives to create large-scale, man-made landscapes rich in color and detail. His 1999 work, "Rhine II," sold for over $4.3 million in 2011, becoming the world's most expensive photograph. Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1955, he grew up in a family of photographers. In 1981, he entered the Düsseldorf Academy of Art to study photography, where he studied under the conceptual artists Hilla and Bernd Becher. His innovative approach to photography has paved the way for his career, establishing him as a leading figure in contemporary photography. Since the 1990s, he has used computer post-production to disassemble everyday images into fragments, then reassemble them from a bird's-eye view into majestic spatial landscapes. This grandeur evokes a sense of shock, making once-familiar images of life seem unfamiliar. Through these fragments, he discovers the interplay of destruction and rebirth between humanity and nature, reconsidering the challenges we face in our broader social landscape, such as globalization, standardization, and capitalism.
