In the Sanatorium of Saint-Rémy-Provence, this former monastery built in the 12th century, Van Gogh painted irises along the path leading to the cloister.
For many artists of this period, this painting was influenced by the Japanese painting Ukiyo-e (Ukiyo-e).
Vincent van Gogh once again adopted the theme of iris, not on the ground like Saint Remy's garden, but with dark blue flowers blooming in a very simple vase.
The sea blue, violet, and each iris has been individually treated and stand out on the blue-green leaves.
