Introduction of works:
Among the German artists of the eighteenth century, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712/1774) is not an original one, but his artistic career has been smooth sailing. His father was a court painter, his mother was also the daughter of a court painter, and his two sisters later became painters. It can be seen that the professional hereditary tradition at that time.
Dietrich had solid skills and was familiar with various subjects. He also understood Dutch and Italian painting schools, and was able to master the Rococo style popular at the time. He analyzed Rembrandt's works in depth, and in terms of style, it is even difficult to distinguish the authenticity from the fake. His most admired landscape etchings were his landscape etchings, and he was even praised by the well-known art historian Winckelmann (Johann Joachim Winckelmann, 1717-1768) as the "Raphael of landscape painting." This kind of realistic landscape Further influence the generations after.
This [Roadside Boulder] is an early piece of his own creation, which shows his understanding and learning of Dutch landscape painting. On the slope on the right side of the boulder, Dietrich used the fine lines of needle-engraving as the base, and then used the thick three-dimensional effect of the etched lines to make the layers more rich. This is the scene at sunset. The sun shines from the right side, because the huge boulders beside the road cast heavy shadows on the muddy road, covering the characters in the picture, a farmer riding a donkey and A child and dog are following. The old farmhouse on the left and a piece of crops that seem to have matured are bathed in the sunset. A pond next to the slope, with different trees and plants, and the bushes behind the farmhouse are reflected, enhancing the tranquil pastoral scenery. In the foreground, two tree trunks lying horizontally beside the road add unexpected flavor to the work. In Dietrich's richly painterly etching lines, the whole picture has to be reminiscent of the works of everyone in the golden age of the Netherlands.
