Also known as the Taiwanese salamander, it's sometimes called the "pepper fish" due to a peppery scent. In their larval stage, salamanders resemble tadpoles and inhabit water. Their gills gradually disappear as their lungs develop, enabling them to breathe air and live on land once fully mature. Salamanders are ancient relict species, essentially living fossils, with traces dating back to the Ice Age, 100,000 years ago. At that time, Taiwan was connected to the Asian mainland via land bridges, allowing for the migration of many species. For over a century, the names of Hynobius Sonani and *Hynobius formosanus* were mistakenly swapped due to lost specimens.
