Hetian Jade, one of China's "Four Great Famous Jades," traditionally refers specifically to jade originating from the Hetian region of Xinjiang, with its "pebble jade" being world-renowned. In a broader sense, Hetian Jade refers to nephrite (true jade). During the unification of China by Qin Shi Huang, Hetian Jade was known as "Kunshan Jade" for its origin in the Kunlun Mountains. Later, it was called "Yutian Jade" as it was within the territory of the "Yutian Kingdom." It was only officially named "Hetian Jade" in 1883 when the Hetian Prefecture was established. Although Hetian Jade is named after Hetian in Xinjiang, it is not a geographical concept but rather a product classification. China classifies stones with tremolite content of 98% or more as Hetian Jade, all within the national standard. This means that regardless of whether it originates from Xinjiang, Qinghai, Liaoning, Russia, Canada, or South Korea, as long as its primary component is tremolite, it can be called Hetian Jade. Hetian Jade boasts a rich spectrum of colors, including white, greenish-white, gray, light to deep green, yellow to brown, and black. Hetian Jade is a metamorphic rock formed by the contact and metasomatism of magnesian marble and intermediate-acidic magmatic rocks. It contains a mineral aggregate of tremolite, actinolite, and edenite, among others. Its chemical composition is hydrous calcium magnesium silicate, with the chemical formula Ca2(Mg,Fe)5[Si8O22](OH)2. Its density ranges from 2.95-3.17, and its Mohs hardness is between 6.0 and 6.5. The primary structure of Hetian Jade is metamorphic, including felt-like cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-nephrite metamorphic structure, microplaty-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microplaty metamorphic structure, and micro-radial (flame-like) metamorphic structure. Less common are relic filamentary and metasomatic coronitic structures. Although the mineral grains in Hetian Jade exhibit some orientation, it is not pronounced. Occasionally, grains show undulatory extinction and plastic deformation. These indicate that the stress intensity of the metamorphism was within the elastic limit of the minerals.
