In many Asian cultures, skulls symbolize death and fear. However, for some cultures, death is merely a part of the life cycle, and the departed continue to live on in the collective memory. UNESCO has even recognized the cultural tradition of the Day of the Dead as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Day of the Dead originates from the ancient Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua cultures thousands of years ago. Today's Day of the Dead combines pre-Hispanic religious rituals with Christian celebrations, typically observed from November 1st to November 2nd annually. Among the most well-known is Mexico's Day of the Dead. In Mexico, it is a grand festival and has become a source of immense cultural pride and a tourist hotspot. Mexicans express the joy of life and their reverence for departed loved ones through vibrant colors. It is believed that as long as they are not forgotten, departed relatives will live on eternally in another world and return to reunite with family and friends on specific days, perpetuating life. Many people dress up as skeletons and wear ornate attire to emulate the Catrina, the skull lady. Numerous individuals also adorn themselves with various items that produce sound, not only to liven the atmosphere but also to awaken the spirits to join the revelry. Different regions in Mexico have their own unique Day of the Dead customs. Tuxtepec: Located in the northeastern part of Oaxaca state, it is renowned for its sawdust carpet paintings. Local residents spend days meticulously arranging sawdust, flower petals, rice, and other materials in various colors on the streets, creating intricate designs resembling carpets, competing with each other during the Day of the Dead festivities. Aguascalientes: Situated approximately 225 kilometers north of Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city, this is the hometown of the illustrator José Guadalupe Posada. The Day of the Dead celebrations here last for a full week, known as the [Festival of Skulls] (Festival de Calaveras in Spanish), culminating in a grand skull parade through the city's main streets. What originally began as a two-day celebration for families has evolved into a nationwide festivity lasting over a month.
