About Sun Shao-Ying Born in Shandong in 1931, Sun Shao-Ying came to Taiwan in 1949. For over 30 years, she worked in the art departments of Kuangchi Press and Taiwan Television Company. After retiring in 1991, she returned to Puli, her late wife's hometown, embarking on a new chapter dedicated to painting and writing. Her artworks possess a distinct contemplative quality, evoking a sense of tranquility after enduring life's upheavals, like a return to simplicity. Her use of color, brushstrokes, and overall atmosphere is refined, serene, and understated yet profound, highly cherished by collectors. She has been invited to exhibit her work over 40 times both domestically and internationally. In 1999, her sketches documenting the reality of the 921 earthquake were a groundbreaking endeavor. In 2006, she initiated the "Taiwan Series" sketching project, releasing one book and exhibition annually. This series includes titles such as "Journey to Alishan," "Small Towns of Taiwan," "Taiwan's Outlying Islands," "Scenery of Puli," "Traditional Crafts of Taiwan," "By the Water: A Watercolor Journal of Sun Moon Lake," and "Lotus Breeze, Orchid Charm." Her 2015 book, "The Joy of Sketching," showcases her abundant creativity and keen observation of the world. Her plein air sketching as a form of performance art, with the field as her studio, is unparalleled. Her watercolors are simple, bright, and fluid. Her mastery of form, structure, negative space, and the conveyance of meaning is truly remarkable. Owning her paintings or art books means preserving Taiwan's most beautiful imagery.
