You might wonder how freehand embroidery differs from regular machine embroidery. Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads a design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical patterns. In contrast, freehand embroidery is a craft where a skilled artisan moves the fabric by hand to create the design. This human touch imbues each piece with a unique character, making no two embroideries exactly alike. The finished embroidery often resembles hand-stitching in its texture and feel. It's an astonishingly skillful technique that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and meticulously stitching while following the up-and-down motion of the machine needle, all while referencing the original artwork. In Vietnam, there are currently just over 400 people who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level (Level 4). Among them, a mere 10 are capable of executing Pangandaran's intricate designs, renowned for their difficulty. However, technical skill alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires artistic sensibility. Even the slightest nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. This is why we entrust Pangandaran's delicate embroidery to the exceptionally talented Hun. Hun, now 46, has been honing his craft since the age of 15, bringing 31 years of dedicated experience to his work. His innate sense of style is remarkable, earning him our complete trust. With Vietnam's rapid economic development, traditional crafts, like many other sectors, face significant challenges. Since 2000, the number of freehand embroidery artisans has been steadily declining. While schools for this craft once existed, it is now primarily learned through apprenticeships with master craftspeople. Hun has trained four apprentices, but he notes that younger generations are increasingly uninterested. The accelerated economic growth tends to sideline traditional handcrafts, and it's anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to dwindle. This trend is progressing even faster in Vietnam than in Japan, partly because the national system offers little protection for these traditions. Consequently, Vietnam's freehand embroidery faces an uncertain future, potentially becoming a rarity within the next decade or so.
