This rimmed bowl is made by combining straw ash glaze, which has a simple and warm color, with fine-grained, soft-colored ceramic clay. Instead of firing in the electric kiln that I normally use at home, I had the pieces fired in a kerosene kiln at the pottery maker that I am currently using. This item is fired using a method called reduction firing, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the kiln during firing, allowing you to enjoy a refined flavor that cannot be achieved in an electric furnace. The straw ash glaze used is an original glaze made by the potter, who himself burns rice straw and mixes it using the ash. It has a color and texture that you won't find anywhere else. Rimmed dishes are easy to grab and lift with your fingers. Although it is a little shallow for a rimmed bowl, it is deep enough to be used as a soup plate. It can also be used for hearty soups, vegetable stews, simmered dishes such as meat and potatoes, and simmered dishes such as pot-au-feu. It is a convenient size that can be used for both Japanese and Western cuisine. I use a small electric kiln and an electric potter's wheel at home to make my pottery, and all processes, from kneading the clay to shaping, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing, are done by hand.
