Cloud Whispers - "Shí Guāng" - Glass Teapot Stand / Large Plate / Dessert Plate

The gateway to time, forever held in the heart; picking up a ray of light to illuminate the soul. Windows, essential elements in a home for ventilation and protection, also serve as passages connecting different spaces, holding profound meaning. Using glass from old windows, retired from their protective duty, and transformed through design and meticulous craftsmanship, these pieces become practical vessels for daily life, continuing to guard the light within our hearts. The old glass is cleaned, cut, and polished, then fired at high temperatures to form and cooled carefully. This process perfectly rectifies any fragility the patterned glass might have had due to rapid cooling in its original manufacturing, restoring its inherent resilience and strength. Precise temperature control ensures the beautiful original patterns are preserved as the glass is bent into shape. Glass is a fully recyclable material and an object brimming with time and memory. A friend once brought the window from her childhood room after her old house was demolished, commissioning it to be repurposed. She wanted the "memory of the space she once lived in" to continue accompanying her in her daily life. The transparency and refractive qualities of glass constantly capture the light in a space, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow, much like memories that become clearer or more blurred over time, evoking a sense of depth. Thus, the name "Shí Guāng" (拾光), meaning "picking up light," not only highlights the characteristics of glass and the act of cherishing fleeting moments and nostalgic memories from the past but also sounds like "Shí Guāng" (時光), meaning "time." Since 2010, when I began making and teaching glasswork, I have used old window glass as a primary material, firing and bending it, and have continued to promote this practice. Retired window glass is fired and bent to create tea scoops (which can, of course, be used for other purposes). The window frames are cut and polished to reveal their natural wood grain, fashioned into rests. Paired with tea needles made of 100% recyclable hand-forged brass, matching teapot stands, and glass coasters cut into various shapes, these pieces are also perfect for serving fruit and desserts, creating a beautiful ambiance.
