It was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasion. Spanish Damascene work predominantly features motifs of flowers, birds, and Islamic geometric patterns. The process involves an iron or copper alloy base, onto which fine lines are etched. Thin sheets of real gold and silver are then used to create patterns, hammered and inlaid into the etched lines. A layer of lacquer is applied and fired to prevent oxidation and rust on the base metal.
