Opal is perhaps the most variable gemstone. Its basic component, silicon dioxide, is the same as that in quartz and chalcedony, but their crystalline structures differ. Quartz is crystalline, with crystals large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Chalcedony is cryptocrystalline, requiring a microscope to see the crystals. Opal is amorphous, with no crystalline structure at all, making its specific gravity and hardness lower than the other two. The most distinctive feature of opal is its play-of-color.
