[The Nine Dragon Sons Hidden in Taiwanese Temples, Each with Unique Talents Guarding Peace]
The saying "The dragon begets nine sons, none of whom are truly dragons, each following their own path" originates from the folk saying: "The dragon begets nine sons, none of whom are truly dragons, each with their own inclinations." It implies that parents should allow their children to develop according to their own preferences, rather than imposing their own ideals and goals on them. This is a blessing for everyone to follow their inner nature and develop naturally.

◾ Eldest Son: Bi Xi (Bì Xì)
Height 5.8 (cm) x Width 5.1 (cm)
Bi Xi resembles a turtle and is skilled at carrying heavy loads. He is a master of lifting, possessing immense natural strength, capable of carrying mountains and rivers. This is his most distinctive feature, and he is credited with aiding Yu the Great in his flood control efforts, dredging rivers. You can find him beneath steles and stone pillars; for example, the nine Bi Xi carrying steles in front of the Chihkan Tower in Tainan.
◾ Second Son: Chi Wen (Chī Wěn)
Height 5.9 (cm) x Width 5.4 (cm)
With a dragon's head and a fish's body, he is of water, loves playing in water, and is an enemy of fire. Legend has it that he is enormous in size and appetite, capable of swallowing anything.
He is often found at both ends of roof ridges, serving to ward off evil and prevent fires, or carved onto the prows of ships to ensure safe voyages.
◾ Third Son: Pu Lao (Pú Láo)
Height 6.3 (cm) x Width 5.2 (cm)
Pu Lao has a strong voice and a very loud roar, with his only minor flaw being timidity.
He can be seen on the frame of temple bells. Legend says Pu Lao fears whales, so the bell striker is also carved with whale patterns or shapes, which makes the bell's sound deeper and more resonant.
◾ Fourth Son: Bi An (Bì Àn)
Height 6.3 (cm) x Width 5.2 (cm)
Resembling a tiger, he is brave, resolute, and upright. He is a representative of loyalty and righteousness, skilled at discerning right from wrong and in legal matters, making him a beast of justice.
His appearance is fierce, and in ancient times, he was often depicted on the doors of yamen or government offices, later becoming a synonym for prison. In modern temples, you can also find Bi An on door knockers!
The "Zhu Que Ji Lei Shu" states: "Bi An, whose form resembles a tiger and possesses great power, is thus placed on prison gates."
◾ Sixth Son: Ya Xia (Bā Xià) ※Often misspelled as Gong Fu
Height 4.8 (cm) x Width 5.3 (cm)
Resembling a lizard, with its head down and tail up, it loves playing in water and is also known as a water-repelling beast, skilled at controlling water. Therefore, it is often placed by riversides, carved as bridge pillars, or as gargoyles on buildings to drain water.
◾ Seventh Son: Ya Zi (Yá Zì)
Height 4.8 (cm) x Width 5.3 (cm)
With a dragon's body and a jackal's head, his personality is violent and aggressive, always with a sword in his mouth and a fierce gaze. He is often carved onto sword hilts and pommels to display might.
◾ Eighth Son: Suan Ni (Suān Ní)
Height 6.0 (cm) x Width 5.2 (cm)
The "Mu Tian Zi Zhuan" describes Suan Ni as a beast with extraordinary speed. It is a lion-like seated beast, with its front paws playing with a colorful ball, and it is also Buddha's mount. It enjoys quiet and loves incense, often found where incense smoke lingers. You can find it beside temple incense burners, symbolizing flourishing incense.
◾ Ninth Son: Jiao Tu (Jiāo Tú)
Height 5.7 (cm) x Width 5.2 (cm)
With a dragon's and lion's mouth, and resembling a conch or clam, it prefers quiet, closure, and seclusion. When faced with external threats, it tightly seals its shell. It is often found on door knocker bases, holding the door knocker in its mouth, with a ferocious expression to guard the entrance, ward off evil spirits, and ensure the peace of the household.
◾ Auspicious Beast: Pi Xiu (Pí Xiū)
Height 5.9 (cm) x Width 5.3 (cm)
An auspicious or wealth-attracting mythical beast from ancient legends. The male is called "Pi," and the female is called "Xiu." Fierce and majestic, it resembles a lion with a dragon's head, a horse's body, and a qilin's horn, with grayish-white fur and phoenix wings.
Pi Xiu feeds on wealth and has no anus, so wealth only enters and never leaves. Legend has it that it can attract wealth and blessings, and even turn misfortune into good fortune.

[The Legend of the Nine Dragon Sons by Miss Conch Design Series]
We hope to use our small efforts to help more people recognize the everyday cultural stories of Taiwan. Frequently visiting temples with elders, we have come to know many deities who bless us in various stages of life: Wenchang for exams, the God of Wealth for prosperity, Yue Lao for love. Beyond the main deities, hidden in every corner of the temple are important ministers guarding the temple and the gods—the Nine Dragon Sons.
We hope that everyone, like the Nine Dragon Sons, can find their suitable place in the future, utilize their strengths, do what they are good at, and develop in a positive direction.
Supplement 1: The main legends of the Nine Dragon Sons in Taiwan differ somewhat from those in China. This series focuses on the Nine Dragon Sons commonly found in Taiwanese temples.
The "Nine" in Dragon Sons signifies "numerous," representing nobility and supreme authority. It is both an indefinite and auspicious number, also symbolizing good fortune and longevity, hence why nine is used to describe the Dragon Sons. Therefore, many of the auspicious mythical beasts we commonly see are also children of the dragon!
Supplement 2: One Dragon Son, "Lao Wu Tao Tie," was replaced in this series. As Tao Tie is considered one of the Four Fiends in legend, he was replaced by the popular and commonly seen Pi Xiu (pronounced: Pí Xiū) to attract wealth and blessings and turn misfortune into good fortune.
Supplement 3: The number of claws is not strictly depicted. We believe that claws are not always fully visible in different poses and can be obscured by the pose itself. Therefore, we have not intentionally drawn all the claws on the front.
Supplement 4:
The legends of the Dragon Sons, as described in ancient literature regarding their appearance, color, personality, and preferences, vary slightly across different dynasties and storytellers. Thus, the overall characteristics are a synthesis of various accounts, designed to distinguish the different Dragon Sons from their father, the Dragon, while retaining legendary traits.
