A Glimpse of Memory My fondness for walnut shortbread cookies stems from my grandmother. It was her favorite snack, a cherished memory from childhood. A small neighborhood store sold a pack of six for 40 NTD. She would carefully retrieve a folded 50 NTD bill from her coin purse—folded in half, then in half again. I'd eagerly volunteer to buy them for her, knowing the change could get me a pack of Doublemint gum. Grandma's coin purse was old and small, its patterns barely discernible. It carried a faint scent of medicinal balm and menthol, much like her clothes. Walnut shortbread was my grandmother's favorite. I like to think I was hers, too.
