mashu is the original furoshiki brand from Kyoto's Baba Dyeing Workshop. Established in Fushimi, Kyoto, in 1913 (Taisho 2), even a century later, every product is still meticulously hand-dyed by artisans using the traditional kata-e-zome (stencil dyeing) technique.
The Baku is a mythical creature originating from ancient China, believed to feed on nightmares. In ancient Japan, it was customary to draw a Baku on pillows to ensure peaceful sleep. This legend later evolved, with the Baku coming to be interpreted as a creature that devours misfortune, thus becoming a symbol of good luck.
