Cissus cactiformis, also known as "Four-Ribbed Pink Vine," is an evergreen or deciduous vine belonging to the Cissus genus in the Vitaceae family, native to southeastern Africa. Scientific name: Cissus cactiformis. Common English names include Veldt Grape, Devil's Backbone, and Cucumber Cactus. Japanese name: 翡翠閣 (Hisui-kaku), ヒスイ閣. The stems of Cissus cactiformis are succulent and grow in a sprawling, creeping manner. The epidermis is green with 4 to 5 ribs that have a wavy texture; mature stems display light brown ribs. Its leathery, palmately lobed leaves grow alternately, each about 3–4 cm wide. Tendrils emerge opposite the leaves, aiding in their climbing growth by twining around supports. Compound umbel inflorescences arise from the nodes, bearing small, milky white or pale yellow flowers, each only about 0.5 cm in diameter. The fruits are red, approximately 0.5–0.8 cm in diameter. Due to its rapid growth and ease of propagation by cuttings, Cissus cactiformis is a highly sought-after succulent. Its square, green stems undeniably resemble a cactus, which is why its specific epithet, "cactiformis," means "cactus-like." Its short, plump form is particularly appealing. Many plant enthusiasts purchase it thinking it's a cactus. It's only when it begins to grow leaves resembling grape leaves, its stems start to sprawl at odd angles, or even when tender stems develop tendrils, that they realize it's a plant from the grape family—a rather amusing discovery! 【Care Instructions】 It thrives in full sun to partial shade. Water when the medium feels slightly dry. It's well-suited for hanging baskets or for climbing on trellises. Given its vigorous growth, it has a tendency to naturalize in tropical regions. 【Propagation】 Propagation is done through cuttings. Even a single segment can be rooted, making it incredibly easy to propagate with an almost 100% success rate! The key is to provide ample water during propagation. Keeping the soil consistently moist encourages root development. If cuttings are not watered sufficiently, they are more likely to wither and dry out. 【Flowering and Fruiting】 Cissus cactiformis does produce flowers and fruits.
