Koishiwara Ware Flying Shave Rice Bowl

Koishiwara is nestled deep in the mountains of Fukuoka, Kyushu. It is surrounded by mountains over 1000m in elevation, with terraced fields and traditional buildings found everywhere. Not only is it a fertile agricultural region rich in nature, but it is also a representative of Japan's renowned folk art pottery. The Koishiwara region boasts abundant clay and timber resources, sustaining the kiln fires of Koishiwara Ware for 350 years. Pottery is still fired using traditional wood-kiln methods today. The most distinctive features of Koishiwara Ware are represented by the flying shave and brush-stroke techniques. Later, these techniques were also passed on to Onta Ware, becoming mainstream techniques in Japanese folk art. Koishiwara Ware was originally called Nakano Ware. It wasn't until the mid-18th century that the pottery produced began to be called Koishiwara Ware. Its history dates back to 1682, when the 3rd lord of the Chikuzen Fukuoka domain, influenced by the immense prosperity of Imari Ware, established a kiln industry in the inland Koishiwara region. In the early days of the kiln, porcelain items were also produced.
