Material Selection The cowhide currently used by "Tangent Linear" is sourced from premium, high-oil content, vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material and the tannery employs vegetable-tanning methods that minimize damage to the leather's quality, minor "scars," "wrinkles," and "veins" are inevitably present on the surface. We make every effort to avoid these during cutting, or to place these sections on less visible or non-load-bearing parts of the product. 2. Pure Hand Stitching We do not use sewing machines for our products; all items are meticulously hand-stitched. Before stitching, special pricking irons are used to punch sewing holes into the leather, which is essential for achieving the beautiful, wave-like stitch effect that distinguishes our work from machine sewing. While this process significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where leather artisans imbue each piece with soul and a gentle, tactile feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before a piece is finished, the edges are also burnished and sealed. This is done to ensure the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Tangent Linear" has developed its own unique edge-finishing technique. First, the sharp edges are repeatedly sanded smooth with sandpaper, then a layer of edge sealant is applied to create a level surface. This process is repeated 2-3 times, followed by a layer of edge wax. Finally, a burnishing tool is used to rub the edges repeatedly until they achieve a smooth finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed products, "Tangent Linear" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the USA. To achieve even and natural coloration, we begin by dampening the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye repeatedly, gradually deepening the shade from light to dark until the desired color is achieved. After drying, a color fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. The surface is then wiped with water to remove any surface dust and further even out the color. As each piece is hand-dyed, there are subtle variations in color between individual bags, making each one unique.
