From a farmer's son to an internationally acclaimed calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao has forged his unique artistic path with steadfastness and focus. He believes that even from an unlettered background, a passion for words can lead to carving out one's value through brush and ink. Early in his career, Tu studied Northern Stele inscriptions under Wang Kai and later became a disciple of Wang Chuang-Hwa, earning him a place among the "Seven Disciples of Wang." His foundation in calligraphy is profound. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-Fu, and though he later dedicated himself solely to calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply embedded in his work. Subsequently, he sought guidance from renowned masters like Wang Pei-Yueh, Hsieh Tsung-An, and Yao Meng-Ku. Under Wang Pei-Yueh's recommendation, he further refined his techniques by studying seal script with the master Hsi Nan-Hsun, progressively deepening his understanding of the art. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met with Master Nan Huai-Chin, immersing himself in the study of Buddhism and Zen. From this point, his creative vision expanded beyond mere technical refinement to embody the philosophy of life itself. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe in every stroke. His characters are not just words, but the flow of the soul, the pulse of the spirit. Tu Chung-Kao is more than a calligrapher; he is a "LOHAS" practitioner who uses writing to embody his life philosophy.
