Each crystal possesses unique shapes and sizes; the actual Herkimer diamond may differ from the product image ❤ Herkimer Diamonds are double-terminated crystal found in exposed dolomite outcrops around Herkimer County and the Mohawk Valley in New York. The "diamond" in their name comes from their clarity and natural facets—the crystals are double-terminated and possess 18 facets in total (six at each point, with six around the circumference). They were also known as Middleville diamonds or Little Falls diamonds, after the first discovery sites in the villages of Middleville and the city of Little Falls, respectively. Herkimer Diamonds gained widespread recognition after being discovered in large quantities by miners in the late 18th century when they cut into the dolomites of the Mohawk River Valley. Geologists discovered exposed dolomites in Herkimer County and began mining there, leading to the nickname "Herkimer diamonds."
