The cut surface of the leather is first smoothed with a coarse file, then a fine file, until it is perfectly flat and smooth. Multiple layers of dye are then applied to create a refined edge finish. The dye penetrates the leather fibers, hardening them, which helps prevent fraying and deformation of the stitching.
