When TROIKA Germany informed me about an upcoming series of globe-related products, I was momentarily stunned, much like finding myself in a Costco produce cooler, or eating shaved ice too quickly. To help myself process this, I decided to experience the globe in the most fundamental way upon receiving a sample: by sharing my space with it. My previously minimalist room now features a 30cm globe. Whether waking up in the morning, returning from work, or during weekend binge-watching sessions (most recently, Netflix's "The Art of Design"), my gaze would invariably fall upon it. It sparked thoughts of catching a Rockets game during a trip to Houston, or recalling the shivers felt standing on a street in Dallas after being stood up by an Airbnb host at 11 PM. The great circle routes taught in middle school (or was it high school?) resurfaced from long-term memory. Honestly, for me, Google Earth, lacking the 3D spatial dimension of a physical globe, fails to convey the significance of great circle routes. It's undeniable that through touch and the construction of 3D space, a connection with our planet feels more immediate and intimate. The feeling of "I think, therefore I am" seemed to return.
