Artwork Introduction_ This beautiful engraving is from George Graves' 1811 book British Ornithology: being the history, with a colored representation, of every known species of British birds, Vol.1 ". George Graves (1784-1839), FLS, was an English publisher, artist, engraver, and colorist devoted to botanical and ornithological works. In addition to Ornithology of Britain (1811-1821), he also wrote and illustrated Ovarium Britannicum (1816), The Naturalist's Pocket Book (1817), and Plants of Britain A Monograph on British Grasses (1822). From 1817 he was responsible for hand coloring and publishing, together with William Jackson Hooker of Curtis' Flora Londinensis (1817-1828). These exquisite studies of Britain's birds include many songbirds, game birds, owls and hawks, divers, waders and seabirds. It contains 144 fine bird plates, most drawn, engraved and hand-colored by George Graves (some plates were made after Samuel Howitt and Sydenham Edwards and engraved by Weddell and Warner.) The "Blue Tit" featured in our collection is considered Britain's most attractive garden bird. It is a small songbird in the tit family, weighing about 11 grams, about half the size of a robin. It is extremely colorful, with a bright blue cap, white face, black stripes over its eyes, a bright yellow chest and blue, green and white wings.
