Published in 1931 by Meriden Gravure Co. of Chickadee Valley, Kent, Connecticut. The original illustrations were by Rex Brasher, and the text was written by Brasher's niece Marie. Birds and Trees of North America was published after Brasher's original paintings painted between 1895 and 1925. His paintings depict 1,200 species and subspecies of North American birds. Rex Brasher is a renowned Connecticut wildlife artist. At the age of 10, his ambition was to paint all the birds of North America. Brasher spent 44 years documenting North American birds and perfecting his art before beginning publication. He depicted birds in various states of development and plumage. The depiction of tree species and bird habitats is also regarded as an important contribution to the fields of natural history and ornithology. Brasher became friends with the famous bird painter Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Fuertes helped Brasher develop his artistic range and technique. Brasher did all the hand coloring, using airbrushes and stencils, to color the birds. Brasher originally estimated that it would take $500,000 to complete a color print of the work, but this would not produce the accuracy he desired. He then decided to hand-color all the copies himself. He worked for 6 months to complete 100 copies of the first volume, realizing that completing 500 copies in his lifetime was almost impossible. It is extremely rare to find a Brasher print from a 1931 publication. Brasher started with 95 subscribers, but when the Great Depression hit, he lost many of his patrons. Eventually, the richest men of the day subscribed to the work, including William Boeing and Paul Mellon. No other American ornithologist comes close to Rex Brasher's achievement in bird illustrations and detail.
