Ginger black sugar 45g | When is this pack for?
Ginger black sugar puts the pungency of ginger into the black sugar you already use. On a damp, cold day, first thing in the morning, or when a hot drink needs a bit more backbone, break off a small piece and drop it into the cup.
The taste is sugarcane underneath and ginger on top, not carried by sweetness. 45g is a pocket pack for your backpack or desk drawer. On hikes, camping, fishing or sailing trips, take one along and eat a piece as it is; no need to dissolve it.
[Three things to know first]
Raw material: sugarcane juice boiled down directly, not reprocessed sugar with added colour.
Shape: a mix of lumps and granules, left by stirring by hand as it cools.
Taste: not the bitter, overly dark kind of sweetness; sugarcane and ginger come through in layers.
[How it is made]
Boiled from Taiwanese ginger juice and sugarcane juice, the traditional way. Under the strong sun of southern Taiwan, local producers look after the cane in an environment-friendly way, letting it take in the winter sun and turn it into sugar.
・Taiwanese sugarcane grown under contract with local producers, handmade
・Environment-friendly cultivation, from a firefly habitat
・Made from the first press of sugarcane juice
・No artificial flavouring, colouring or essence
・Not a low-cost reprocessed sugar
[FAQ]
Q1. How is ginger black sugar different from plain black sugar?
A. It is boiled from Taiwanese ginger juice together with sugarcane juice, so alongside the sugarcane aroma and caramel note there is ginger fragrance and a little heat. Plain black sugar tastes only of sugarcane. The difference is in flavour; you use them the same way.
Q2. How is it usually used?
A. Most often it is dissolved in hot water as a ginger black sugar drink. Some add it to black tea or milk, or use it for ginger soup, ginger tea, or sweet rice-wine soup with rice balls. In braises it can replace ordinary sugar and adds a layer of ginger.
Q3. How do I use a 45g pack?
A. Eat a piece as it is, or drop one into hot water or black tea. Take a pack on hikes, camping, fishing or sailing trips for a bite when you are tired.
Q4. Ginger or plain?
A. Plain black sugar (70g, 150g, 300g) tastes of sugarcane and works for drinks, cooking or eating as it is. The 45g ginger version has a more distinct flavour, for people who like ginger or want to make ginger soup or ginger tea. If you can't decide, try a small pack of each.
Q5. Why are the pieces irregular?
A. Only first-press juice is boiled into a thick syrup, which has to be stirred constantly as it cools so it does not set into large blocks. The irregular lumps and granules come from that hand-stirring.
Q6. How should I store it after opening?
A. Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of the sun and away from moisture. Black sugar absorbs moisture and odours, so press the zip closed after opening and use it up soon.
