This trip to Kyoto brought encounters with many wonderful people and experiences. It allowed me to rediscover the joy of living mindfully and witness the ancient capital's dedication to preserving and innovating traditional culture and craftsmanship. What captivated me most at first sight were the clasped purses crafted by kimono artisans. Mr. Nakamura, a gentle and distinguished gentleman, has retired from the kimono-making profession but continues to design clasped purses using kimono fabrics he has cherished throughout his life.
【Premium Kimono Tsumugi Series】
The spirit of lifelong dedication is fully evident in the details and material selection. This piece features the rare 'Oshima Tsumugi'. This kimono textile, originating from Oshima Amami in Japan, involves dyeing the silk threads with mineral mud before weaving the fabric. The process is complex, requiring twenty to thirty steps, and today, only a handful of artisans carry on this tradition, making it increasingly scarce. In Japan, it is exclusively used for high-end kimonos.

'Oshima Tsumugi' is characterized by its subtle, resonant patterns with low saturation, making it highly enduring and perfectly suited for modern everyday wear. Carrying this bag adds a touch of vintage yet chic style, unlike the overly bold and vibrant patterns found on common fabrics. You also won't have to worry about carrying the same bag as someone else. Even with small accessories, using superior materials reveals one's taste in fashion. The artisan also advises, "Please use it gently; the texture will become even softer over time."

One can only say that Kyoto residents truly appreciate fine things! It's no wonder they feel such pride in their city. We are grateful to Mr. Nakamura for agreeing to specially craft a batch for us. I must be honest: compared to the myriad of clasped purses available elsewhere, the initial pricing might seem less accessible. At first, I was merely drawn to its appearance, not paying much mind to the premium kimono fabric or the exquisite clasp, which I took for granted. However, after receiving and using it, I truly understood its value. With every opening and closing, I can't help but marvel, growing more fond of it with each glance. If you have the opportunity to experience it firsthand, you will understand what an art-level clasped purse is. It will undoubtedly inspire you to collect more!
